Empire Records

The Story: Empire Records captures a day in the life of a record store that doubles as a meeting place for young slackers, dreamers and doers. When a clerk (Rory Cochrane) gambles away the store's cash, the boss (Anthony LaPaglia) tries to recoup his losses. Meanwhile, flirty Gina (Renee Zellweger) provides a counterpoint to love-struck Corey (Liv Tyler), who's crushing on a co-worker. from Netflix.com

On this, the day that my Blockbuster closes for good, I bring you my favorite movie of all times. I know, some of you think that Four Brothers holds this title. Don't get me wrong, I love that movie, but Empire rocks my world.

I don't remember when I discovered Empire, but I am always in the mood to watch it. It never fails to lift my spirits and make me smile. So I demand that you give it a shot. You can thank me later.

More reasons to love this movie, it has the best soundtrack ever. It has an amazing cast (best Renee Zellweger movie) and it's totally quoteable.

David E. Kelley/Joss Whedon Love Child

Lately whenever I find myself hard-pressed to explain something to someone who’s unfamiliar with it, whether it be a person or a fast-food chain, I find myself thinking of two things it’s most similar to and saying something like, “Oh, you’ve never been to Fire House Subs? Ok, well if Quizno’s got together with Subway and they had a baby: voila, Fire House.”

As I mentioned in a post last week, I’ve been watching a lot of Ally McBeal lately, which has reminded me how much I like David E. Kelley, which made me think, "do l like him more than Joss Whedon?" And I was hungry while thinking this, so I was like, "hum… Fire House," mix well and stir and you get, "I wonder what a child between David E. Kelley and Joss Whendon would look like?"

Now before you get all, Liz the movie Junior was total science fiction, check yourself and relax. I’m not talking about an actual human child baby, I’m talking about a TV show baby. What would a Kelley/Whedon series look like exactly?

To answer this question, we must first look at our potential parents and see what each one brings to the table. David E. Kelley is a lawyer turned screenwriter/TV genius who’s brought you Emmy Award winning shows like L.A. Law, Doogie Howser, Picket Fences, Chicago Hope, Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Legal and the NBC’s new show Harry’s Law. He also happens to be married to Michelle Pfeiffer, which should not be overlooked.

What Kelley brings to the table:
  • Typically procedural show backgrounds (i.e. crime, legal or medical shows) with very strong lead characters and usually a pretty unique pool of supporting characters. Not afraid of a good ensemble.
  • Universal themes like love, morality, justice and love (he’s big on the love) coupled with strong political views that are related to whatever’s going on at the moment.
  • Really well-written monologues on just about every episode.
  • Female characters who’re really good at their jobs, but are lowsly with their personal lives and have a miniscule shot of finding true love.
  • Insane people, who when you think about it, are the only one who really get it.
  • Overarching story of the series is like a merry-go-round of emotion bringing his characters up and down in a continuously evolving pattern.
Daddy number two has a pretty impressive resume as well. Joss Whedon is the creative genius behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the greatest TV show ever, and I’m not the only one who thinks so. Whedon has a pretty strong cult following. Lots of people out there are drinking Whedon’s kool –aid. He also brought us Angle, Firefly and Dollhouse. He’s also writing and directing the new Avengers movie.

What Whedon brings to the table:
  • Strong female lead characters who can easily take you in a fist fight.
  • Leading men with a bit of an edge who don’t mind getting their hands dirty to make the world a better place.
  • Star crossed lovers. (vampire and vampire slayer, morally uptight do-gooder and prostitute)
  • An element of science fiction.
  • Episodes chock full of action and adventure.
  • Witty banter and a sense of irony.
  • Overarching story of the series is the hero’s epic journey.

When we mix all this together, we get….

WHITFIELD

“WHITFIELD” is a one hour drama set in present day Chicago. The show chronicles the life of one Dorothy Lewis, an over-worked, underpaid clinical psychologist who works in the Whitfield State Hospital for the Mentally Ill. In the pilot episode, Dorothy discovers the personal journal of Mike Wisniewski, a nineteenth century millionaire and activist who worked in the same building over a hundred years ago.

Through Mike's journal we are introduced to Chicago as it was during the height of the Industrial Revolution and see how he takes on greedy businessmen and rival gangs to fight for better pay and better working conditions for Chicago’s factory workers. Dorothy reads Mike’s stories aloud during group therapy session with a group of criminally insane patients as a way to connect and teach them about morality. It doesn’t take long for Dorothy to feel a strange connection between herself and Mike, and she eventually falls head over heels in love with him.

Our characters include the brilliant Dr. Dorothy Lewis, who is a bit of a basket case herself; Mike Wisniewski, our fearless crusader and his British butler, Bruce; Nell, the pretty and perky Nurse/receptionist; Craig, an Orderly and lovable buffoon; and a whole slew of crazy people.

And you know what they say, if it turns out you don’t like your firstborn, you can always have more…

D. T. EDWARDS, Esq.

“D. T. EDWARDS, Esq.” also a one-hour drama is set in futuristic Boston, Mass and follows the struggles of a young lawyer named Davis T. Edwards as he fights for the civil rights of zombies, werewolves, and vampires.

I think both summaries illustrate my point that a love child between Kelley and Whedon would be a critically acclaimed, award winning hit with a ferociously devoted following. Somebody get their agents on the phone so we can work this thing out.

Take Me Home Tonight

The Story: From the writers of "That '70s Show" comes this retro dramatic comedy set a decade later, in the financial boom of the late 1980s, about a recent college grad trying to figure out what to do with his life. Amid the goings-on at a raucous Labor Day party, brilliant but underemployed Matt Franklin (Topher Grace) learns a slew of lessons about life and love in this ensemble-cast film starring Anna Faris, Dan Fogler and Teresa Palmer. from netflix.com

I've been counting down the days for this one to come out. Just my luck, our movie theater never got it. They prefer to play one superhero movie on five screens, like that makes sense.

Anyways, I finally got to see TMHT in Burbank. Thank you Marriott! It was TOTALLY worth the wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I loved everything about this movie. The soundtrack was epic. I love love Topher Grace in everything he's in! I think that Teresa Palmer ( She was Number 6 in I am Number 4) is one of my new favorite actresses. Dan Fogler made me laugh so hard my sides were hurting. His dance off is superb.

Anna Farris plays Topher's twin sister and it was nice to see her play something other than a dumb blonde. She actually seemed normal, and I liked it. Also, I need to see her and Chris Pratt in more movies together. Some of the funnest moments came from their scenes.

My favorite thing about TMHT is the story. Pretty much anyone can relate to being fresh out of college and not knowing who you are or what you want to do with your life.

You can find it on DVD July 19th.

Peep World

A and I did a little traveling together last week, which we always enjoy. What did we do on our vaycay you might be tempted to ask? Did we hit the beach? The pool? The clubs? No. Despite our best efforts, we ended up doing what we always do on vacation. We took the opportunity of in-room movie channel to catch up on a few movies we missed seeing in theaters.

Pathetic, I know. Bygones. (I've been watching a lot of Ally McBeal lately.)

First up was Take Me Home Tonight, which we'll try to get to later in the week. Today I want to talk about the second movie we watched, Peep World.

Peep World is a B movie that Allie recommended we watch. To be honest, Allie's B movie recommendations have been a little swing and miss lately, but Peep World had me at Sarah Silverman.

The movie follows a day in the life of the Meyerwitz family as they prepare for their father's birthday dinner. To complicate matters, because matters need to be complicated, they are also dealing with the fall out from the publication of their little brother's book 'Peep World.' In the book, Nathan (little brother) spills the beans on many family secrets and paints his three siblings in a less than flattering light.

Peep World presents a cornucopia of weird and quirky characters. It's refreshingly funny. Mostly because its a group of some of the best character actors today, Rainn Wilson, Judy Greer, Tarajia P. Henson, Kate Mara and Michael C. Hall, to name a few.

My only complaint was that it ended too soon. So, if you find yourself at a Marriott this week, give Peep World a try. If not, it's scheduled to be released on DVD next month.

Eulogy

The Story: When Katie’s grandfather passes away, she’s given the daunting task of writing his eulogy. She turns to the quirky members of her dysfunctional family for help, but they’ve each got their own problems to worry about.

Eulogy is an absurdly hilarious black comedy that keeps us laughing every time we watch it. The plot seems simple, but it gets more and more interesting as Katie’s wacky family members start one fight after another. These people will make anyone with crazy siblings feel totally normal. They’re like a train wreck that you just can’t help but watch. Even the painfully embarrassing screens are hard to pass up on, and we can’t stand watching people embarrass themselves.

There are so many things that make Eulogy a great film. It’s got an all-star ensemble cast. It’s totally quote worthy, and the humor is spot on.

The thing we like most about it, however, is that every time we watch it we find something we missed before, some little treasure that makes it funny in a whole new way. We so need screenwriter Michael Clancy to make some more movies like this one!

Dolan's Cadillac

The Story: A young woman witnesses the murder of a van full of illegal immigrants. When the mobster behind the immigration ring murders her to keep her silent, her husband dedicates his life to avenging her death.

Since I work at a video store we get privilege of renting Tuesday’s new releases on Friday. Every now and then I give the films that go straight to DVD a try to see if they are worth anything. Most of the time there’s a reason why these movies didn’t make the big screen. They suck. Fortunately, that’s not always the case. A couple of weeks ago, Liz and I took a chance with Dolan’s Cadillac, and it paid off.

DC is based on a short story written by Stephen King. Stephen’s okay, I'm not a big fan. Science Fiction isn't my thing. Good thing DC is more of a revenge thriller. Christian Slater and Wes Bentley star as opposing forces and both give one of their best performances to date. Slater does evil, super villain so well that it is scary, and Bentley’s wounded soul will make your heart break.

There are some pretty amazing B films out there just waiting for you to give them a shot.

Meet Bill

The Story:  Bill's life sucks. His wife is cheating on him, and he waists his days away working a dead-end job for his father-in-law. With the help of an overly confident teenager and a gorgeous lingerie saleswoman, Bill rebels against his miserable existence and decides to chase his dream.

Watching Bill's life unravel is extremely entertaining. The worse it gets, the more you really feel for the guy. Sure he's fat and sort of a wimp. His life hasn't gone the way he thought it could, and that makes Bill a guy we can all relate to.

Not only does MB give us a pathetic hero that we can root for, but it also provides a whole host of jerks we can hate, his stuck-up in-laws, his cheating wife, and her TV anchor man boyfriend.

What really seals the deal for us on MB is the casting. It has a great group of actors playing the kinds of roles they were meant to play. We love Elizabeth Banks as the villain and, shockingly enough, Jessica Alba is pretty funny too. Who knew?

It's hard to do this movie justice, but its a great comedy with a really good story, so just trust us.

Role Models

The Story: Danny hates everything and everyone. After a really bad day at work, on top of being dumped by his girlfriend, Danny and his friend, Wheeler, get arrested for destroying property. Sentenced to 150 hours of community services, they’re stuck mentoring two kids who make jail look like fun.

If you haven’t seen Role Models yet¸ we have just one question for you.

What are you doing with your life?

Get off the couch. Drive to Blockbuster and rent it. Now. Seriously, you will not be sorry.

RM is one of those movies that use crude humor in all the best ways. It’s obscene without being repulsive. . There’s also some pretty great physical comedy, but they don’t take it so far that it becomes ridiculous.

We also have to give a shout out to Paul Rude, one of our favorite comedic leads. We loved him in Overnight Delivery, Clueless, and Forgetting Sarah Marshal. He really can do no harm in a good comedy. We can't wait to see Our Idiot Brother, but RM allowed him to bring something new to the table, which is his writing. Albeit, a majority of the lines for the film were improvised due to the writers’ strike, we would definitely like to see pen some more screenplays.

Two more reasons to love Role Models, it introduced us to Jane Lynch, if you love her in Glee she will rock your world in RM. Secondly, Bobbie J Thompson. This little kid is freaking amazing. He steals every scene he’s in. I can’t believe that they got away with some of the things he said, but I loved every minute of it.

                                          !WARNING!
There are some definite potty mouths in this movie, so be prepared

Armored

The Story: Ty is the new guard for an armored truck company. When his veteran co-workers try to involve him in an inside heist, Ty has to make a hard decision. Will he go along with them and take the money, or will he risk his life to stop them?

Money can turn best friends into worst enemies. At least it does in Armored.

This is not your typical heist movie for two reasons. First, the line between the good guys and bad guys is thinner than Sarah Jessica Parker. Secondly, the audience follows the heist in real time, which builds some intense tension throughout the film.

Armored is by far, my favorite heist movie, mainly for its simplicity. The writer follows the most important screenwriting rule: don't waste the audience's time. This movie will grab your attention in the first ten minute and won't let it go until the big finale.

A Perfect Getaway

The Story: Newlyweds Cliff and Cydney are honeymooning in beautiful Hawaii, where a pair of murderous psychopaths happen to be on the lose. Suspicious of everyone they meet, they'll have to watch each other's back if they want to make it off the island alive.

"You gotta get the details right or else all you’re making is one big crap-tastic movie." This quote from A Perfect Getaway couldn’t be more right. APG hinges on the details. It’s a great who-done-it story that will leave you guessing until the end.

While it’s not exactly an edge of your seat thriller, stick with this movie until the end. APG does an excellent job of building some major tension in the first hour, and then letting it all explode into some awesome action sequences towards the end.

We give APG a big fat A for casting. The three main actors featured in the movie all play roles that are outside of their norm, which makes for a nice change. This is by far the best role we’ve ever seen Steve Zahn in.

Another plus, you can check out Chris Hemsworth before he was Thor
